So far everyone has lost weight and we are in about one month with two and half months to go. The true test comes during the Holiday Season. This is long-term, and I have certainly felt a lifestyle change. Last Saturday for the first time in two months I had a McDonald’s Value Meal. Long story short, I felt pretty sick all day long, it is amazing how quickly unhealthy food can affect your system!
I have been using an app called GymPact that pretty much forces me to workout at least three times a week, if not, then I have to pay 5 dollars, if I do workout, it get about .35 cents. The premise behind this app is that when money is involved, people are much more likely to exercise. It is true! I am too cheap to pay $5 dollars so now go out of my way to make sure I workout. It is also synced with my fitbit and runkeeper, so it is more convenient to work out. A great app!
Here are some other truths about exercising that nobody really wants to hear but everyone should follow. Exercising is about mastering the basics and being disciplined to keeping them.
- Losing weight and exercising is about the long-term. Ignore short-term results and go for the long-term, it is healthier and you will maintain your strength and tone much longer. Don’t sacrifice the long-term for short-term benefits. If you falter and miss a couple of workouts, don’t worry, pick yourself up and get back on your horse! If you commit to the long-term progress will come.
- Keep a workout journal. You should keep a workout diary (Gym Pact does this for me) and keep track of your exercises, weights, times, and see your progress. You want to progress consistently without burning yourself out or plateauing.
- Keep a steady schedule. The journal will help you stay disciplined. Instead of working out when you feel like it, make it an appointment that you can’t miss, then you won’t have excuses. There will be some emergencies that pop up, but with a schedule, you have a way of making sure you go back to the gym when life sometimes gets hectic.
- Start with the basics and be consistent. Every so often a new workout will pop out on the market, crossfit, p90x, T25, insanity, etc. It is better to be consistent instead of trying to jump from workout to workout. Making slow progress it much better than getting excited and starting a workout, getting bored by it, then waiting for the latest to come out before you start up again. Sometimes working out will be boring, but as long as you are consistent and doing the right things, it can be better for the long-term.
